The Game Reserve
On the border of Botswana, along Limpopo River, lies Mapungubwe Game Reserve with a total land area of 25 000 hectares. Mapungubwe Game Reserve is situated in Mapungubwe National Parc which was designated a World Heritage Site in 2003 by UNESCO. We offer a grand variety of scenery and abundant wildlife.
Why Mapungubwe Game Reserve?
Mapungubwe Game Reserve offer each and every guest a an individual experience Open areas of grassland overlooked by majestic rocky hills, known locally as koppies , these are made up of gigantic boulders balancing upon one another, reaching into the sky, forming cracks and crevices between them, creating hiding places for wildlife, you never know whats watching you for above, leopards are common inhabitants in these areas.
Stretches of landscape that provide grazing for savannah inhabitants such as Zebra, Impala, Warthog and Wildebeest, while Giraffe can be frequently observed cropping the leaves and thorns of Acacia trees which stand like lonely sentinels over the plains.
Another feature to be found in the reserve, which never ceases to amaze the visitor, is the Baobab tree, not just by virtue of its enormous size, but also the commanding presence it exerts over the landscape. They are among the most long lived of vascular plants and have large flowers that remain reproductive for a maximum of 15 hours, opening at dusk so quickly that the movement can be detected by the naked eye. African tribal tradition refers to them as upside down trees, due to the branches taking on a root like appearance once the leaves have fallen. Some African Baobab trees have been catalogued to be in excess of 1500 years of age.
What does Mapungubwe mean?
Steeped in history and mystery, Mapungubwe owes its name to a local kingdom which existed from 1075-1220 AD.
There is some controversy regarding the origin and meaning of the name, but conventional wisdom indicates that it stands for Place of the Jackals or alternatively Place where Jackals eat.
The reserve has a number of well-appointed dwellings in different areas of the reserve, including a uniquely designed lodge that is built into the rocks on the side of the mountain over looking the Limpopo River, during the rainy season when this river floods it leaves one feeling a great sense of awe as large amounts of water thunder down the riverbed, smashing and churning over massives rocks and boulders embedded deaply in their pathway, this is a truly amazing sight to see, the open air balcony of the lodge that overlooks this majestic river in turn is where guests can enjoy an elevated view of the river and look out towards Botswana and the chances of seeing elephants as they enjoy the cool water at the end of a hot day.
